Dear Unit 4 Families and Staff Members:

We hope this communication finds you healthy as we travel together through the uncharted waters of COVID-19. I have been so impressed with the way our community has rallied to support students and families during these challenging times. Our hearts go out to the individuals and families that have been touched by the Novel CoronaVirus. Our thoughts are with you!

Requesting a District Chromebook

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and extended school closure, the Unit 4 school district is working to provide district Chromebooks to households who may need additional support. If you are interested in receiving a district Chromebook for your student, it will be checked out to your student who will be responsible for its care.

Schools of Choice Registration Deadline Extended to April 15

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Due to the state-mandated closures, Unit 4’s Schools of Choice Registration Deadline has been extended to April 15. Families have multiple options to enroll their 2020-21 kindergartener prior to the new deadline, including: 

School closure extended through April 30

Dear Unit 4 Staff and Families:

On March 31, the Governor of Illinois extended the stay-at-home order until the end of April. This means schools will remain closed through April 30. We know this news brings a lot of emotions and disappointment for our students, staff and families across the District.

District Administrators, teachers and staff have collaborated to provide remote learning during the closure. Building principals and teachers will continue communicating with families about how their building is implementing those plans.

Remote learning, chromebook distribution and food distribution change

Dear Unit 4 Families:

It has been a week since we communicated with District families. We are committed to giving you periodic updates without over-communicating, since we know you are busy dealing with your own challenges. I am very proud of the way our Unit 4 Community is responding to the COVID-19 public health crisis. Below are a few important items as we move into next week.

Hello Unit 4 Families:

I wanted to take a moment to check in with all of you as we reach the end of our first week of learning at home. I know this has been a stressful and emotional couple of weeks for everyone. I want to thank all of you for your continued patience and flexibility as we all work to navigate this together.

Unit 4’s priority during this time is to support our students and families socially, emotionally and academically. This week included:

Due to COVID-19 precautions, Unit 4's Board of Education meeting on Monday, March 23 will be conducted virtually

In person access will comply with CDC guidelines and state mandate for social distancing

In accordance with CDC guidelines and the State mandate to limit in-person attendance at public events due to the COVID-19 public health crisis, the Unit 4 Board of Education meeting on Monday, March 23, will be conducted virtually. The Board agenda will be limited to essential business items.

School closure extended until April 8

Dear Unit 4 Staff and Families:

On Friday, March 20, the Governor of Illinois mandated, due to the COVID-19 public health crisis, that all public and private schools remain closed until April 8. This closure includes all District events, practices, travel and activities. That means the new return to school date as of right now is April 8. However, please know this could change again. 

This is the news we have been preparing for, and yet, I know it is news many of us hoped not to hear.

Important update for Unit 4 Families for March 23-30

Dear Unit 4 Families:

As you are aware, the Governor has mandated the closure of Illinois schools from March 17 through March 30. Champaign Unit 4 is on spring break until March 20.

We want to take this time to let you know some important details of Unit 4’s plans going forward. This message is long, and it contains a lot of important information. I encourage you to read it all the way through.

Unit 4 closes Windsor Administrative and Mellon Buildings to the public

Dear Unit 4 Community:

As we continue to navigate these uncertain times and follow the state-mandated school closure, the decision was made to close the District’s Windsor Administrative Building (beginning Tuesday, March 17) and Mellon Building (effective immediately) to the general public through March 30. 

During this time, you may call (217) 351-3800 to reach the District with any questions and concerns you may have. Staff will monitor this line and its voicemails throughout each business day.

Food distribution plan during school closure

During the state mandated school closure, Champaign Unit 4 is working to create a food distribution plan for those 18 and younger and any individual participating in the Young Adult Program. They do not have to be a Unit 4 student to utilize this service.

In order to get an idea of the number of students who need these services during the closure, we are asking District families to fill out this form:

Governor announces closure of all Illinois Schools

As of Friday, March 13 the state has mandated, due to the COVID-19 public health crisis, that all public and private schools close to students effective Tuesday, March 17 and continuing through Monday, March 30. 

Here in Unit 4, this closure will include all District events, practices, and the Kids Plus Program beginning on Monday, March 16.

District administrators have been working on plans in anticipation of this announcement including the following:

 Unit 4 Families and Community:

As developments evolve concerning the Coronavirus (COVID-19), beginning Thursday all in-person conferences will shift to teleconferences out of an abundance of caution. This is based on best practice guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Champaign Urbana Public Health Department (CUPHD) to keep gatherings less than 50 people.  Any documents will be shared via email. 

Board of Education Approves Pair of Central Appointments

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Champaign Unit 4 School District announced a pair of Central High School appointments at its Board of Education meeting Monday night.

Schools of Choice Registration to Offer Mobile Locations in March

As the Champaign Unit 4 Schools of Choice registration period enters its final month before the March 31 deadline, a pair of mobile registration sites will be offered in March. With the new Choice Days options, families will have multiple locations where they can register incoming 2020-21 kindergarten students in Unit 4.

ALICE Parent Training scheduled for April 1

Champaign Unit 4 is offering ALICE training for parents/guardians to walk through the state-mandated drills.

The next training is Wed. April 1, 2020 from 4-6 p.m. in the Mellon Administrative Center (703 S. New St.). There are no registration of participation fees, however, you MUST pre-register online for this course so we have an accurate count: ALICE Training Registration Form. Childcare will be provided.

Central High School student artists receive more than $782 thousand in scholarship offers

The best student artists from more than 100 Illinois High Schools will showcase their art and compete for more than $88 million in college scholarships offered at the 8th Annual Illinois High School Art Exhibition (IHSAE). The Senior Scholarship Exhibition is one of Illinois' largest and most influential student scholarship exhibitions.

High school graduation dates approved for 2020-21 & 2021-22 school years

The Champaign Unit 4 Board of Education has approved the graduation dates for the 2020/21 and the 2021/22 school years.

For school year 2020/21:

  • Novak Senior Celebration Thurs., May 20, 2021 at 6 p.m. at CECC
  • Central High School Tues., May 25, 2021 at 6 p.m. at Krannert Center
  • Centennial High School Tues., May 25, 2021 at 8 p.m. at State Farm Center

The last day for seniors will be Tues., May 18, 2021.

For school year 2021/22:

Edison 8th grade Boys Basketball team wins 3rd in State

The Edison Middle School 8th Grade Boys Basketball took 3rd place in the Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA) State Tournament.

This is the first time in the school's history that the 8th grade team has placed in the top 4. The team ended its season 21-3.


NO School Friday, Feb. 14, 2020

February 14, 2020 - 5:24am

Due to weather conditions, Champaign Unit 4 School District will not hold school on Friday, Feb. 14.  Only Essential Personnel Groups 1 and 2 are to report to work. All evening activities will be held.
